iOS USER GUIDES
Any iOS manual, in PDF format, can be downloaded to the iBooks app. (You did remember to get iBooks from the App Store, didn’t you?) With a manual in iBooks, on your iPhone or iPad, you can refer to it at any time. You can use PDF on your computer as well. A PDF file allows you a search of the manual for any questions you have. “PDF” stands for Portable Document Format, originally created by Adobe Systems. Your iPad and iPhone can create PDFs, which are ideal documents to share with other Windows and Macintosh computer users.
Using the Safari browser on your device (or any web browser on your computer) you can go to the Apple Support website at http://support.apple.com/manuals/ . You have a choice of manuals for all iPhones, iPads and computers. Touch/Click on the blue text (the link) for the one you want to view. PDFs open easily in Safari. You will see a quick menu of buttons as options for any PDF file in the top right corner. Blink and you will miss the menu! To see the menu options again, press and hold in the middle of the PDF page. When you have apps that can view PDFs, like iBooks, Kindle, GoodReader, you can use the menu to save the PDF from the web page to another app. iBooks was demonstrated today.
In iBooks, your document will appear on a bookshelf. Touch the document to open. Swipe to see the next page. Also. across the bottom are tiny thumbnails of the pages. One benefit for PDFs is searching for iOS answers. Go to the upper right hand corner for the search field and type words for the action or problem. “Siri” was the keyword demonstrated.
Alternate method: open iBooks and go to Store. In the upper right corner is the Search field; try a keyword search for “iPad User Guide” or “iPhone User Guide” and “iPhone Manual.” These documents from Apple are free but you have to use your Apple ID to download even free books and documents from the iBooks Store.
iTUNES
iTunes is a media player. It is basically a SERVICE. (Yes, it is an app on your iOS device and computer, but the power of iTunes is what we can’t see - the Apple Service.) You can play, download, organize music and video on a PC or Mac or iOS devices. It is a media store and the latest version for computers is 11, although some prefer the 10 version. Originally called the iTunes Music Store, there are now over 400 million active users. On your computer, you can go to http://apple.com/itunes and look for the blue button in the right hand corner to download the latest version. iTunes is not a visible app on our devices, it is part of the iOS operating system and the content we manage in iTunes might appear as the Music app, or you can also download the iTunesU learning app.
iTunes on your computer is one way to backup your iPhone and iPad and in the early days of iPad 1, iTunes was how we moved files created on our device to our computer and vice versa.
There have been many changes. Practice your web skills with a keyword search in Google for “itunes11 review” and look for discussions. iTunes has been reviewed in all of the major computer magazines because it is available for both Windows and Macintosh.
There were many sidebar questions about the topics today. Look at our semester schedule for new sessions on PDFs, iBooks and iTunesU.
Homework: Half of the room was to download Bump, (which looks like a blue background with a white b in it) is an iPhone app (will also work on an iPad), and the other half were to discover Siri. We should work in small groups and have fun learning. Later our groups will report back to everyone.
