We will begin a three-part emphasis on how our devices can be used on our trips.
Tom Monahan will discuss ways your iPad will make your trip better and also how to use a foreign SIM card for cheaper phone calls.
Note: We had some discussion about locked and unlocked phones and whether you can use a foreign SIM card. It turns out there are new federal standards on this issue. This is what the Federal Communications Commission says about it:
"If your smartphone is capable of using one, you might consider buying a "SIM" card (the removable card used by some mobile handsets containing subscriber data and the phone's number) with a local number in the country you are visiting, effectively turning the handset into a local phone. However, you should check with your carrier to determine whether your device can utilize international SIMs."
The FCC has two fact sheets on the subject: One General and one for International Uses.
