NEWS: Check-in to confirm your email address - Initially WIFI access for iPads w wifi only; end of class, pick up a strip with login information. Once you successfully use this login information on campus, your device will remember for the next time you are on campus.

The little boxes on the screen of your device are considered "apps" which is short for "applications." We will add web pages to our home screens, and they will be little boxes just like an app.
You get apps from the Apple App Store app - yes, an app on your device! Open it to see what is popular or search for an app by name or a keyword that describes its function. If you know you want to download "iBooks" that is enough of a search to find it. If you know it is a an app to read books, then search for "book reader." Reading the descriptions of apps and the comments of buyers is helpful. Sometimes a book is sold as a standalone app, Toy Story Read Along and Alice In Wonderland, are great interactive examples. Oh, did I mention, they are free.
I like to buy the Apple gift cards for iTunes at my grocery store. Sometimes I buy the three-pack so I can share two and keep one for my own use ;-) Then it is easy to buy new apps and books using my Apple ID and password. You have been to the Apple Store for their introduction workshops, right?

- WiFi-Only iPads will go to Settings > WiFi > choose SacLink Secure and enter the user id and password from the strip of paper.
- iPhone & iPad with active cellular data plan will get a prompt to join a wifi network. If you have the strip of paper with user id and password information, choose SacLink Secure the enter your info. You can also go to Settings > WiFi > choose SacLink Secure and enter the user id and password.
- Problems? Arrive before class begins next Friday for troubleshooting.
- Turn on your device
- Swipe right to left to see pages of apps (ok, I have several pages...)
- Swipe left to right to find Search (type "RS iOS" to find Notes or email)
- Hold finger on icon > wiggles > move to new location then touch Home button to stop wiggles
- Single touch Home button to go to first page
- Double touch Home button to see recent apps appear at the bottom of your screen
- Swipe left to right on the exposed icons to find the Brightness buttons then touch Home button
Let's explore where you set security on your device. As world travelers, you will want to set a passcode and auto lock time on your devices.
In these lists, I use ">" as a shortcut to indicate the next step in a sequence.
Settings App - it looks like gears
- Settings > General > Passcode Lock > ON ... Simple = 4 digits
- General > Auto-Lock > 10 Minutes or
- iCloud > Find My iPad/iPhone > ON
- WiFi > ... see the strip info or listen to instructions
- Brightness > touch to change the backlight on your screen
Did you download the Find My iPad/iPhone app? Open it. What does it tell you? You will need to log in using your AppleID.

- Sign In page > read Setup Instructions link
- Sign in with Apple ID & Password (Not sure? Visit the Apple Store for help!)
- Devices button on top left (for a list)
- Touch device to bring up map
- Touch (i) to bring up options (play sound or send message)
- This is a serious step! Please consult with the Apple Store before triggering this option!
- Use Remote Lock or Remote Wipe. Remember Passcode Lock!
Easy access to websites
Save Home Screen Bookmarks & Make a Folder
- Open the email from RS Apple Support with the link to our web site
- Touch the link to open Safari browser & volia! our page appears
- Tap Boxed Arrow icon > Add to Home Screen
- Edit the name to RS iOS > touch the Add button
- On your Home screen the page will appear, just like an app
- Anytime you want to see our site, touch the RS iOS to open the page
Get the iPad User Guide
- Open Safari browser
- Find Bookmarks icon (ipad - at top of screen or iPhone - at the bottom)
- Scroll to bottom of the Bookmarks list to iPad User Guide, let the page open
- Tap the Boxed Arrow icon > Add to Home Screen
- Edit the name to iPad Guide > touch the Add button
- On your Home screen the page will appear, just like an app
Make a folder of related bookmarks. A folder appears as an box with tiny app icons. Touch the folder to open it, touch outside the folder to close it. This takes practice!
- Tap Home button to see new icons (not apps)
- Touch RS iOS icon until it wiggles > drag over another icon to combine into a folder
- Rename folder to RS Sites
- Touch the Home button to stop the wiggles
- Touch off the open
- Move folder to Home screen
Discovery: It does not seem possible to rename a saved bookmark. Go to the web page again, make and save a new copy - this time carefully naming it before touching the Add button. However, folders can be renamed.

By the way. Your iOS device can be put to sleep, you rarely have to turn it off completely. Wow, this is truly the "post PC era," because many of the rules I learned about computer do not apply to smart phones and tablets.
